Scott Fields

The duo Scott Fields (guitar) and Stephan Rath (theorbo) was formed by the 2007 Köln MusikTriennale as part of a series that paired Early Music specialists with New Music specialists. Since then it has continued to perform and record the works of Fields and those of other composers.

Stephen Rath specializes in the repertoire and the family of fretted instruments from the Middle Ages through the early classical period. In this duo he plays only theorbo. Stephen has performed in more than 100 early-music opera productions, many of which he also directed. He is the cofounder and musical director of the Batzdorfer Orchestra.

In the past sixteen years Scott Fields has focused on two aspects of music composition and performance in the field of New Music and avant-garde jazz. One focus has been creating structures that blur the dichotomy between notated and improvised music. The other has been developing new tonal and rhythmic organizations for notated and improvised music.

Scott Fields most frequent settings as a composer and performer — in addition to the duo with Stephan Rath — include an acoustic guitar duo with Elliot Sharp, a duo with tenor saxophone virtuoso Matthias Schubert, and the Scott Fields Ensemble (string octet).
